Three Facts You Probably Did Not Know About Wi-Fi
Modern society has allowed for a boom in mobile technology. From mobile phones to tablets, 21st century individuals need on-the-go connections like never before. An effective and high performing Wi-Fi system has become a necessity for all the professionals and businesses using mobile devices. These days, you cannot expect mobile tech users to stand around, aimlessly searching for a stable Internet connection or a wire to connect with the LAN. Wireless connectivity has intimately changed the way we operate and communicate, but are we as familiar with Wi-Fi as we think?
Here are a few facts you probably did not know about Wi-Fi technology:
- Wi-Fi does not mean “Wireless Fidelity” No, Wi-Fi is not an acronym. According to the Wi-Fi Alliance, “Wi-Fi is a trademarked term describing the device or technology based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) wireless communication standard 802.11.” The original term was “Wi-Fi” with a hyphen, but the punctuation does not affect the actual pronunciation of the word. Some feared a hyphenated name would be confusing to digest, so a tagline was attached to the name: The Standard for Wireless Fidelity.
- Wi-Fi originated in Hawaii The ALOHAnet, also known as the ALOHA System, was a pioneering computer system which allowed for the first public demonstration of a wireless packet data network. The system originated at the University of Hawaii in the 1970s. This discovery took 20 years for it to become what we know today as the true predecessor of Wi-Fi.
- There are several different kinds of Wi-Fi The original form of Wi-Fi we knew during its inception is not used anymore. Since then, innovators have provided several versions of the original with improved functionality. The newer versions of Wi-Fi are still compatible with the older versions, but the oldest version is virtually obsolete. Today’s standards require Wi-Fi technology to be speedy, cost-effective and within close range.
Wi-Fi has truly reshaped the way we live our lives. It is so seamlessly woven into our society that we often take for granted its value. Knowing more about Wi-Fi allows us to appreciate interconnectivity on a whole new level.
